Patchwork Santa Ana – Spring 2018

Back in May, I vended at my third Patchwork show. The first one was sort of a disaster. The weather was terrible, the attendance was terrible, and I was horribly sunburned due to a faulty sun-umbrella. The second one was a lot better. I broke even and learned a lot.

This third one was great. I was actually in a new location, so a fairly low traffic area, but still managed to walk away ahead. Which is sort of a first for my shows. Plus, I sold a few items I wasn’t expecting to, so that was pretty amazing. I also sold out completely of my ice cream cones, so they are next on the list of things I should work on before the fall/winter show after Thanksgiving.

The festival was really expanded this year, it even included a fashion show put on by student designers at the local college.

I am still trying to figure out the perfect booth layout, as I sell such a huge variety of products that I have no idea how best to display a little of everything! Ideas and suggestions are totally desired. 🙂

Yarn Update

1

Whoot! Two blogs in a month! I am on a roll. Hehe…

Okay, so this blog is more for me than it is for you guys. I am trying to get a good overview of yarn purchased vs yarn crocheted so far this year…so here it is.

Also, something to remember about my yarn crocheted. Because of the move, I haven’t had my boards set up, so from March – present, I have been tracking yarn based on completed projects only. There are so many I have started and not finished that aren’t in the count. Hopefully, I can get my board up here shortly and go back to tracking skein by skein like I was before. 🙂

Yarn Purchased So Far 2018

23,057 yards
18,141 yards of Paton’s Metallic
3,096 yards of Bernat Baby Blanket
1,820 yards of Red Heart Super Saver

Yarn Crocheted So Far 2018

8,508 yards
3,305 yards of Lion Brand Pound of Love
1,760 yards of Red Heart Super Saver
1,227 yards of I Love This Yarn
1,152 Yards of Crafter’s Secret

981 yards of Bernat Baby Blanket
83 yards of Caron One Pound

Well, considering I have already purchased more yarn in August…I am guessing I need to get my but into gear crocheting in order to out-crochet what I purchased. To be fair, almost all of that was purchased in January. Does it even really count? Hahaha. 🙂

Big Fluff

I want to start by stating that I have the absolute cutest model ever. My little niece is pretty much the greatest model in child form to ever exist. Even amongst the chaos, dirt, and disaster that is my home, she still manages to look amazing. She is also wearing my younger daughter’s old pajamas, which makes this photo an even bigger favorite.

I posted a few months ago about the large roving wool blankets I was making for Christmas presents for the nieces and nephews. I just wanted to post this to show a quick peek at another of the finished blankets.

Again, I must strongly emphasize that this is NOT yarn. It is roving wool that is barely, barely felted together. It comes apart easily, it will tear, and it is VERY heavy (and very expensive). It is not designed to be dragged around the house, used all the time, or have pets on it. It cannot go in the washing machine or dryer. It is NOT a practical blanket at all.

These are decorative, good lap blankets for an afternoon in bed reading. And my sisters understand this, as do the older kids (the girls).

I love working with this stuff. It is super soft, easy to work with, and is so beautiful. But, I also had to accept that there is a good chance that the money I spent on the fiber will be a wash within a few months of gifting these blankets.

But, for me, that was all worth it. The kids are very happy, and to me, that is worth just about everything.

That 2018 Spirit

1

2017 was a lot of falling behind, not meeting my goals, and struggling to keep my sanity. I had a whole slew of health issues, to include a surgery, non-related physical therapy, and an entirely separate day spent in the ER getting a CT. I started back at school full time, and I tried to spend a little more time focusing on what I wanted to do, make, and enjoy. So, the business side of the house didn’t go as swimmingly as hoped.

However, each new year brings a whole new level of chaos and crazy, so 2018 is bound to make up for 2017. It may be worse, but hey, it could be better! So, I have made a more realistic plan, and hopefully will be able to achieve all of this in the upcoming year.

Goals for 2018….

  • Crochet more yarn than I buy. Period. No ifs ands or buts…Get into that stash!
  • Update this blog at least once a week.
  • Sell 150 items, including through shows and online.
  • Attend 3 craft fairs. Actually sell something at each of them. 🙂
  • Write, review, and list 2 new patterns.
  • Have all Christmas presents made and ready to ship by Thanksgiving.

November Review

logo

November was really all about me. I spent a lot of time working on things, for me. I made a Harry Potter scarf for each house for me, I made a shawl for me, plus I made a bunch of Christmas presents. I made one amigurumi for a friend to order in December, and that is about it. It was nice, and relaxing, to work on my own projects for once. And since I didn’t have anything in particular in mind, it wasn’t difficult to work through my stash for nearly all of what I worked on. Plus, my daughter started some Christmas presents for her mom and that side of the family, so that helped with my count. (Hey! It comes out of my stash ==> it counts towards my yarn crocheted in a month! lol)

November Plan

Oct 30 – Christmas Props
Yea…no

Nov 6 – Thanksgiving Props
Yea…no

Yarn Crocheted in November

4,984 yards total (I am actually really surprised to see that I crocheted more than I purchased…I purchased A LOT of yarn this month!)

268 yards of Caron One Pound (horsie)
102 yards of Lion Brand Pound of Love (blanket)

October Review

logo

October was sort of a bust for me. I sold very few candy corns or even patterns, so I am guessing that the trend is starting to die down. And with my limited time to redo my photos and get my other listings back up, it doesn’t look like things will go much better for the next couple of months either. Oh well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

October Plan

Oct 2 – Halloween Props
Done. All I did pretty much.

Oct 9 – Halloween Props
Done. I even made some cool candy corn witch hats that I will eventually blog about.

Oct 16 – Halloween Props
Done. I even made some cool candy corn witch hats that I will eventually blog about.

Oct 23 – WIPs
Done. I finished up some earrings, some hairbows, and some hair snoods.

Oct 30 – Christmas Props
I am still considering if I am even going to go this route. I am tired and am focused on making some easy, fun stuff for me…as well as some Christmas presents.

Yarn Purchased in October

2,684 yards total
812 yards of Caron One Pound (for a special order from a friend)
1,872 yards of Lion Brand Scarfie (I really just thought it was pretty and wanted it…)

Yarn Crocheted in October

3,267 yards total (Well…at least I crocheted more than I purchased…)
2,184 yards of Red Heart Super Saver (candy corns)
710 yards of Crafter’s Secret (candy corns)
373 yards of Lion Brand I Love This yarn (toddler sweater)

June Review

logo

June was a very busy month. As evidenced by the fact that it has been over a month since I’ve blogged, and that I am not closing June out until nearly the end of July. And July was just as busy, so no high hopes there.

It is pretty safe to say that I have given up on my plan for the year. I have fallen so far behind, and I have so much else going on, there isn’t time for it.

I have changed directions with product for a brief moment in time while prepping for the one and only festival I plan to do this year. And, unfortunately, it looks like I will be giving up my major money maker, as I have not had time to sufficiently prep for Halloween this year, as I have in previous years. Plus, I am officially a full time college student again, and still working a full time job. So, being that this business wasn’t exactly raking in the cash to support my family, it is sadly going to sit on the back-burner, smoldering.

June Plan

May 29 – Halloween Props
Nope

Jun 5 – Amigurumi
Nope. Though, I did have a couple of orders that were amigurumi…does that count?

Jun 12 – Photo Props
Not for the shop, but I did make a really cool princess blanket for my niece, and a really bad airplane blanket for my nephew. Oh, and I also made a photo prop for a customer order. Does that count?

Jun 19 – Christmas Props
Nope. I was scrambling to finish an airplane.

Jun 26 – Hats
Nope. I actually didn’t crochet at all while I was in Europe. Except for maybe like two hours on the plane.

Yarn Purchased in June

10,955 yards total (YIKES!!)
1,775  yards of Crafter’s Secret (for the photoprop and amigurumi orders)
9,180  yards of Pound of Love(for the blankets for the kids and because I had a minimum to spend for my coupon)

Yarn Crocheted in June

3,315 yards total (Not too shabby considering I spent a week out of the country and not working)
1,065 yards of Crafter’s Secret (orders)
2,250 yards of Pound of Love (gift blankets for my family)
